The HVF in Canada
Having worked for 20 years with Special Needs children in Kamloops, British Columbia, Canada, I retired from teaching. I joined the Human Values Foundation (HVF) in 2004 and began to introduce its values program, called Education in Human Values (EHV), to the public school system in B.C.
During the course of my visits to schools, I found that there was a growing awareness of the need for the inclusion of values education and character formation in the curriculum.
Over 20 sets of the EHV program were ordered locally and are currently in use in schools as supplementary material to the B.C. Ministry of Education document called the “Personal Planning Curriculum”.
Copies of the EHV program have been catalogued and are on the library shelves of the Thompson Rivers University and the local Teachers' Learning Resource Center.
Presentations have been made to student teachers, local organizations and parent groups which are working together in order to promote the development of active, confident, healthy and considerate young people, who can participate fully in family, school and community affairs.
Schools are now previewing the new Social and Emotional Education (SEE) program for 12 to 14+ year olds.
