In recent years, there has been an increase in the incidents of violent crime and drug abuse. In particular, the increase in the number of children who kill has saddened and appalled us as a society.
Various reasons are offered for today’s so-called decline in moral standards. Many believe that a major way to address this moral dilemma is for children to be taught more effectively the difference between right and wrong, especially how to respect other people and their property. Much research shows that education should be values-based and should take place in a co-operative, loving, truthful, respectful and caring environment.
Two increasingly popular programmes, which help children to discover, explore and develop lasting values, which can be applied in school, at home and in the wider community, are the Education in Human Values and Social and Emotional Education programmes.
These programmes operate under the auspices of the Human Values Foundation, which is a non-denominational, private company, limited by guarantee. It does not work on behalf of, or represent any particular religious or spiritual interest. |
