Human Values Foundation

Life-enriching values for everyone

The EHV programme is for primary school children
of 5 to 12 years.

EHV is an educational programme comprising a series of Lesson Plans based on five universal core values, which transcend religious and cultural differences. This user-friendly resource pack is suitable for assemblies and classwork. Cross-curricular in its approach, some elements of the EHV programme focus on tranquility, encouraging children to develop calmness, whereas other aspects help them to build up assertiveness and self-esteem. It helps children to discover, explore, practise and develop lasting values, which can be applied in school, at home and in the wider community.

Hundreds of schools in the UK have already found this deeply researched and clear approach to values education to be a long sought-after answer to apparently insoluble problems facing our society.

EDUCATION IN HUMAN VALUES consists of a set of three books (A4-size): a Teaching Manual and two books containing 44 Lesson Plans, covering 2-3 years' work on common core values. Lesson Plans are comprehensive and universal and each one includes a story and a song. Where music access proves difficult, a CD containing 30 songs is available to support the lessons. The Lesson Plans cover many spiritual and moral values. They give children confidence and self-esteem, thereby helping to tackle some of society's problems, such as crime, racism, drug abuse and violence. They help children find ways in which they can live harmoniously and effectively with others. The EHV programme has the greatest impact when the whole school participates - children and all the adults, whatever their role in the school community.

This programme is excellent for meeting the requirements of the curriculum for Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural (SMSC) education; Personal, Social and Health Education (PSHE); Citizenship, Social and Emotional Aspects of Learning (SEAL); and "Every Child Matters".

Based on the core values of Truth, Love, Peace, Right Conduct and Non-Violence and incorporating many other values, the Lesson Plans are entirely practical, with the concepts being taught through a range of techniques. These techniques include:

  • Class discussions
  • Story telling
  • Singing
  • Quotations
  • Group activities
  • Silent sitting (sometimes known as silent reflection)

To help staff understand how other teachers apply the EDUCATION IN HUMAN VALUES programme for primary schools, the Human Values Foundation has produced an introductory film, which can be viewed on-line or ordered on-line. There is also a training film, which can also be ordered on-line.

The website addresses that appear in this programme are given by the Human Values Foundation in good faith. Teachers and other users of this programme are advised however, to check a website's suitability before permitting children and students to use it as sites and addresses can change over time.
